19. Regata Copa Bavaria-Baleares 2013 (26 de oct. - 1 de nov.)

Again the weather gods helped to make the 19th edition of our Bavaria-Balearics-Cup, celebrated the last week of October in the Bay of Palma, a picture perfect event. A summerlike regatta with day temperatures reaching up to 25° - about 5 degrees above the average for this time of the year. More than 150 participants were very pleased with perfect sailing conditions. We only suffered one interruption when a short but heavy thunderstorm with torrential rain crossed the island on Tuesday. For safety reasons the planned long distance regatta to Cabera had to be cancelled Mehr…

After three qualifying races for all starters, the regatta committee divided the yachts into a Gold Fleet (10 boats) and a Silver Fleet (13 boats) so that the remaining five races were sailed in two different groups.

In the Gold Fleet the four sportive Cruiser 40 S, new entries in the charter fleet of Bavaria Spain, were in everybody’s focus of attention. Would they be able to beat the outstanding favourite „Ballyhoo“ (Cruiser 42) with skipper Thomas Rudewald, multiple champion of the Cup in previous years? “Ballyhoo“ dominated the first two races as expected but then the team around Francois Kunz with the Cruiser 40S „Miró“ won races 3, 4 und 5 to become the overall champions of the 19th Bavaria-Balearics-Cup. On the second place with a difference of four points we had yet another Cruiser 40 S, „Picasso“ with Robert van Sloten closely followed by Thomas Rudewald and „Ballyhoo“ who achieved a third place in the final result. Note: The other two Cruiser 40 S in the regatta field did not perform too well. So it is not only the right boat, but a well-coordinated team plus a good portion of luck that makes a winner!

In Silver Fleet Andreas Flach with the 40 Cruiser „Arwen 2“ won by a narrow margin, Horst Ramisch with Cruiser 46 „Praslin“ and Raymond Blümer with Cruiser 39 „Sunrise“ came in second and third, each with a difference of one point only.

Further activities included an informal paella dinner prepared and served right on the dock as well as the final prize giving ceremony in Casa Eduardo, just a few steps away from Marina La Lonja, with live music, lots of good food and drink.

Although participants practised good seamanship and the rules of fair play. throughout the regatta week, we had an incident when the yachts „Mistress“ and „Brittany“ collided after a tack. The crewmembers were lucky and escaped with a fright and just a few contusions but the material damage was quite significant.

A warm thank you to the racing committee around Albi Sutter (one of the pioneers of our Cup!) and all participants, those who joined us for the first time this year and the many “serial offenders” who have been with us for many years. All the best and we hope to have you all back for our jubiregatta, the 20th Bavaria-Balearics-Cup, celebrated from the 25th to the 31st of october 2014.

Información general sobre la Copa

What is the Bavaria Cup?

Every year sail sport enthusiasts from all over Europe meet in the bay of Palma to measure their skills under mild temperatures and good winds. When the sailing season in northern Europe is already over, Bavaria Spain invites amateur sailors to Palma de Mallorca for this traditional fun-regatta.

When does it take place

Every year at the end of october in Palma de Mallorca.

Who can participate?

This Cup has „amateur“ caracter, everyone who likes sailing and has fun with this sport can participate. As the name indicates it is a brand Cup where only Bavaria Yachts are permitted. If you are the proud owner of a Bavaria you can inscribe yourself with your own yacht, if not you can charter one from us. Most of the participants have a charter yacht – and they sail into the top ranks with them!

Gold- and Silver fleets

All yachts sail the first qualifying races together, before they are divided into Gold and Silver fleets. Like this we achieve that independently of rating, boat size or equipment we have crews with similar capacities competing against each other. This ensures more fun and excitement until the end.

The races

The complete event is carried out and surveyed by a professional regatta committee under official racing rules. After the qualifying races there are between 1 and 2 races each day. Each day has a prize giving and the points are added until at the end there is a winner in each fleet.

The races include the classic “up and down” and “triangles” courses in the nice bay of Palma and an “offshore” race to the island of Cabrera or Pto. Andraitx (depending on the wind and sea conditions)

Regatta programme

A varied programme is offered which includes: Opening reception with beer, wine and nice tapas in the Mar Salada Lounge, dinner in restaurants with traditional mallorquin dishes, a visit to a wine cellar, tours through the old-town of Palma. The crews will also have the opportunity

to do something on their own.

The costs

The inscription fee depends on the yacht size and costs between 300 € – 600 € per Yacht. The fee for food and beverages is 120 € / per person. For the charter prices of the yachts please see our current pricelist for 2013.
